Training can boost employee productivity, creativity and competitive advantage, which altogether means a return on investment (ROI) that you can be proud of.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, unfortunately, not all training programs live up to their potential. Actually,<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2017\/07\/reasons-online-training-program-fail.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> ineffective training<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can often have a negative effect on your business\u2019 bottom line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not all doom and gloom because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you catch those nasty issues before they\u2019re repeated, and improve the value of your training efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s say you\u2019ve created a <strong>high-quality online assessment for an eLearning course,<\/strong> but you discover (through <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) that learners aren\u2019t performing very well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Actually, more than 50% of them are doing really badly. You could just ignore this. Or, you could investigate the problem (like maybe the assessment is set at a difficulty level that\u2019s too high for the course), and fix it before the next course goes live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, catching issues before they\u2019re out of control is great, but it\u2019s far from the only advantage of using the right <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Being able to track and measure the effectiveness of your training, and make continuous improvements, results in both a <strong>better training experience for your employees <\/strong><\/span><strong><i>and<\/i> a better ROI.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><b>Know Your Metrics From Your KPIs<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we dive into the different metrics, let\u2019s take a step back to explain what we really mean when we talk about \u201cmetrics\u201d. <strong>Metrics have become a buzzword in almost every industry today<\/strong>, to such an extent that the true <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics definition<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has become a little cloudy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, metrics refer to the broad measurement of something and aim for a quantifiable result so that it\u2019s easy to compare with other metrics. For example, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">percentage improvement in sales staff call numbers after training on new database software<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is why KPIs are often used to implement metrics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you ask us, we prefer to define metrics as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quantifiable measures used to track and assess the status of a specific process<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or in simpler terms &#8211; highly specific measurements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s important to remember that training metrics<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> are no good unless they can actually be measured,<\/strong> either through KPIs or sub-metrics. For example, to \u201cimprove sales staff performance\u201d is not a metric by itself. It\u2019s more of a business goal. \u201cImprove sales staff call rates by 25%\u201d is far more measurable!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when planning <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how to measure training effectiveness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, keep in mind that the details of each metric you set may require you to establish more detailed KPIs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What Does Training Effectiveness Mean, Anyway?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Effectiveness in a training context can take a few different forms.<\/strong> A popular angle is a positive return on financial investment. Another is the performance improvement of learners in the training program, like increased productivity or improved teamwork capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before starting any training program, make sure that management and other relevant board members have agreed on what is expected from the training program, and how its success should be measured.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/3-things-look-lms-reports.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> many ways<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to measure training effectiveness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of the most important <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fall into the following categories.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Activity and Engagement Metrics<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given how much time, planning and financial resources are invested in a training program, it\u2019s useful to know that your learners are actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2017\/02\/corporate-training-millennials-workplace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>engaging<\/strong><\/a> with it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because if they\u2019re not engaging, then they\u2019re definitely not learning. And if they\u2019re not learning, then your employees also aren\u2019t getting any closer to those strategic training and development <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2017\/05\/how-set-measurable-learning-objectives-goals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>objectives<\/strong><\/a> you\u2019ve been shooting for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, some of the areas to track with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Time spent on each activity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Are learners struggling with a particular activity? Maybe they require more support, or the activity is too difficult?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Time to complete the course:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Are learners taking too long to complete? Is the course too difficult, too easy, or too time-consuming?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Course completion rates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How many learners are managing to complete the full course?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Activity completion rates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Which activities aren\u2019t being completed by learners, and why?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Learner drop-off rates:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How many learners aren\u2019t making it to the end of the course?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Learner drop-off points:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Where did the course lose the most learners? Why?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These metrics can be gathered automatically by your Learning Management System (LMS). Luckily, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> related to this objective are relatively easy to calculate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pre- and post-tests can be useful for measuring improved knowledge and understanding.<\/strong> Then, to measure how well learners are progressing in their new competency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/are-quizzes-really-that-telling-assessing-elearning-assessments.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>assessments like quizzes<\/strong><\/a> or eLearning simulations can offer timely feedback that helps learners to figure out how well (or not so well) they\u2019re doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are <strong>simple but effective <\/strong><\/span><strong>metrics for evaluating training and development<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> That\u2019s the easy part. But measuring the extent to which new knowledge and skills have been practically applied to employees\u2019 jobs or the business, is a little more challenging.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because having new skills means little if<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/how-employee-performance-determines-training-program-success.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> your employees<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aren\u2019t actually using them! These <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> measure the impact of training directly on the business:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Job impact: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have there been changes in productivity, sales, customer service ratings, or operational efficiency? Are employees quicker, more effective, or producing higher quality?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Time to job impact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How much time lapses between the completion of the eLearning course, and noticeable performance improvement?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><b>Business impact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Is there a relationship between training, and change in profit, or the achievement of strategic goals? Has there been a decrease in staff turnover?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Training ROI:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Has the cost of developing and\/or delivering training reduced, and training ROI improved?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Behavior change can be difficult to measure quantitatively, but sometimes specific performance changes can be measured. For example, in the case of sales staff who were trained on a new database system, the percentage increase in the number of daily customer calls can easily be measured.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Learning Experience<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all of the above <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training metrics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are crucial to understanding whether or not your training efforts are paying off (both directly and indirectly), it\u2019s also important to <strong>understand how your employees felt about the learning experience<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all, if they felt that the training was too easy, too difficult, unrelated to their career development goals, or simply boring, they\u2019re unlikely to rate the company\u2019s training programs as one of the highlights of their job. This means that training will fail as a tool for attracting strong recruitment candidates and retaining top talent. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you go about measuring learning experience? Through surveys and feedback tools that measure user experience. Here, learners are able to rate them:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality of learning materials and content<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the relevance of the training<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality of facilitation (where applicable)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ease of navigation through the learning path<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appropriateness of assessments<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality of feedback<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the eLearning course as an overall experience<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Modern eLearning authoring tools make it easy to build surveys into the end of an eLearning course.<\/strong> A quality survey is focused on 20 or less key questions and is built on an easily-interpreted scale, for example, a range from 1=Strongly disagree to 5= Strongly agree.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>LMS Metrics<\/b><b> to Measure Training Effectiveness<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Demonstrating the effectiveness of your training is made much easier by using appropriate training metrics<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> And, when metrics are used to identify problems and make improvements to the learning experience, you\u2019ll be able to increase the value of training for both learners and the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But getting all the measurements you need, at a click of a button, means choosing an<\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efrontlearning.com\/contact?demonstration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> LMS<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the right tools and features.
