Mobile learning is the<a href=\"http:\/\/mnalearning.com\/resource_view.php?id=70\" target=\"_blank\"> next big thing<\/a> in the LMS\/eLearning space.<\/p>\n<p>But you\u2019re skeptical. \u00a0You\u2019re the kind of hard-headed \u201cshow-me-the-numbers\u201d type that won\u2019t just rush headlong into the newest online training trend.<\/p>\n<p>You want to be prepared first. \u00a0You want to know, \u201cwhat\u2019s it gonna cost me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, I\u2019ve spent a lot of time in the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.capterra.com\/learning-management-system-software\" target=\"_blank\"> learning management system<\/a> space, and I\u2019ll tell you.<\/p>\n<h1><b>The true cost of mLearning<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>Obviously, costs will differ depending on your organization and needs, but you can still get a good rough estimate by following some key, basic rules.<\/p>\n<p>Because mobile learning is, essentially, publishing your eLearning courses as a mobile app (either web-based or native) costs for mobile learning will largely mirror costs for developing a general mobile app. \u00a0That said, here\u2019s the information you should use to estimate them:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.propelics.com\/resources\/whitepaper-enterprise-mobile-app-development-cost-factors\/\" target=\"_blank\">Research suggests<\/a> that to develop just one screen of a mobile application takes about one week with a full time employee (FTE). \u00a0This includes planning, development, and then testing and final approval. \u00a0Thus, for example, an eight page enterprise mobile app would take eight weeks. Multiply this by the hourly salary of your FTE to come up with a basic estimate of costs. \u00a0Note that this will not include any one-off costs like developer licenses for app creation tools.<\/li>\n<li>Developer licenses will cost you typically around $100 a year, but if you\u2019re using a course authoring tool to develop the content and publish it to mobile<a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/captivate.html\" target=\"_blank\"> this could be closer to $1,000<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mobileworldlive.com\/deloitte-brand-apps-failing-to-find-an-audience\" target=\"_blank\">A study from Deloitte<\/a> claims that developing for multiple mobile platforms will increase costs as well. For each additional platform\/OS (like Blackberry and Android) you develop a mobile app for, costs go up by 60%.<\/li>\n<li>If you decide to go with an external app developer, expect to pay anywhere from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluecloudsolutions.com\/blog\/cost-develop-app\/\" target=\"_blank\"> $8,000 to $50,000<\/a> for a native, database app. \u00a0This also means you\u2019ll still be responsible for providing all the course content yourself, so be sure to factor that into the costs as well.<\/li>\n<li>Try to account for miscellaneous costs. \u00a0If you\u2019re converting existing content to a mobile format, that will add to the cost (even just re-doing graphics like banners to fit better on a mobile screen will have a cost).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, now you know the potential costs of adding some mobile learning courses to your training content. \u00a0But don\u2019t let this discourage you. \u00a0Despite the numbers, the potential benefit of mobile learning actually <i>is<\/i> a big one, especially if you\u2019re the kind of organization that has workers or employees out in the field, as it allows \u201cpoint of need\u201d training resources and allows employees to learn even when they\u2019re stuck at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>Even if your workforce isn\u2019t remote or always away, mobile learning has been shown to increase retention of training material and it combats that dastardly <em>Forgetting Curve<\/em> because it can be done anytime, anywhere, and often.<\/p>\n<h1><b>What else?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>Did I forget any considerations for mobile learning costs? \u00a0Other hidden expenses I didn\u2019t mention?<\/p>\n<h1>Author<\/h1>\n<div><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.efrontlearning.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/jp-bio-pic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2029\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.efrontlearning.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/jp-bio-pic-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"jp-bio pic\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>J.P. currently works as a Content Editor at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capterra.com\/learning-management-system-software\" target=\"_blank\">Capterra<\/a>, a privately held technology and online media company focused on bringing together buyers and sellers of business software.
